The Black Toe Legacy – From ’85 to Now

The “Black Toe” AJ1 is back. KJ walks us through its 40-year legacy before the 2025 drop.

Retros With KJ returns this week with a deep dive into one of the most iconic sneakers in Jordan Brand history: the Air Jordan 1 Hi OG “Black Toe.”

Originally released in 1985, this silhouette helped solidify Michael Jordan’s influence on and off the court. With its distinct black overlay, white base, and red heel and outsole, the “Black Toe” quickly became one of the most recognizable and beloved color blockings of the Jordan 1 family.

KJ gives us a quick history lesson, tracing the sneaker’s many iterations—from the OG to the 2013, 2016, and now 2025 version. This year’s drop pays tribute to its early lineage with a key detail: the “Air Jordan” script on the ankle, a nod to MJ’s rookie era and the original sample seen during the '84–'85 season.

Whether you remember lacing these up back in the day or this is your first shot at owning a pair, the Black Toe 1s represent a golden era in sneaker history—and they're back at Kicking It.
